After doing the thing and visiting the temples in Siem Reap, it was time to head off to the capital for a short stop. It was a surprisingly pleasant bus ride. The bus was not freezing cold like other buses we had so far, it didn’t take too long and we had functioning wifi on board. We headed straight to our hostel when we got to Phnom Penh and received each a ticket for a free beer at the hostel bar. Obviously we had to check it out, but since I already had the only beer on tap at the bar yesterday, I got me a shot of Mekong 31° gold label whiskey.
It was cheap, had a clear light amber look and came in a big glass. Seems like Cambodian “shots” are a bit different. The “whiskey” smelled sweet and spicy but also mild. Probably because it is made out of sugarcane and actually more like a rRum than a whiskey. The taste was slightly sour, sweet and had an interesting mix of spices in it. I guess it has 31 percent but I’m not sure since it was quoted with 31° on the label and I couldn’t find anything online. Overall not too bad but I couldn’t really drink much of it without a mixer.
